What future for dirty tankers?

The jury is still out on what cocktail of fuels will replace heavy sulphur fuel oil in marine bunkers when the 0.5% sulphur regulations kick in post-2020. Myriad views expressed in recent high-profile research reports or exchanged at various forums, fall broadly into two camps – the middle distillate view and the residual fuel oil view. Each, of course, implies a remarkably different outcome for residual fuel oil flows and for demand for dirty tankers employed in that trade.
